VOICe technology does not use echolocation, ultrasound and the like, and is based on the perception of the coded visual information that comes with the camcorder.
The device itself vOICe is special glasses with video camera, connected via radio with a compact computer, and attached headphones. The camera continuously scans the environment and transmit information to a computer, which converts the visual image into a coded audio signal.
Encoding is done according to a specific algorithm, which the user vOICe is initially trained. And this specially encoded sound human brain transforms into a black and white picture, thanks to the neuroplasticity of the brain.
The user (blind person) will learn to use the system vOICe, but rather to teach your brain to translate the encoded audio signals into an image. vOICe is not a magic wand that instantly become sighted. Only practice can bring this skill to perfection. It will definitely happen, even if progress may seem slow.
With crawl spaces and transformation of visual images encoded in the audio signal of the vOICe helps to detect moving objects and large font.
Using the system vOICe can be compared to learning a foreign language: after some time the user gets familiar with transform sound into a visual, and will be able to recognize the environment “automatically” without thinking.
The software constantly converts images from a camera into complex sounds. For example, a bright spot of light gives a short beep.
