Electric freight locomotive 2ЭВ120 – two-piece locomotive of dual power, with the originally planned design speed of 120 km/h, with a power of 9600 kW. In 2018, the structural speed of locomotive 2ЭВ120 increased to 140 km/h (however, its designation has not changed).
Dual-voltage freight locomotive 2ЭВ120 designed for driving trucks and heavy trains weighing up to 7000-9000 tons on long stretches of Railways of the CIS countries with 1520 mm gauge, electrified with DC 3 kV and AC voltage of 25 kV, 50 Hz. Change kind of current is carried out for 20 seconds.
The design of electric laid down the possibility of an optional configuration of diesel-generator plant with a capacity of up to 500 kW for each section of the locomotive (option “last mile diesel”). This solution allows to use the locomotive in starting and ending points of routes to perform the shunting work regardless of the availability of shunting locomotives and to continue the movement of the composition in emergency cases, de-energized sections, for example, possible to form and to withdraw the composition from the boundary of the pipeline in the way of General use and at the end of the route to execute the unloading of the whole. With the supply of diesel fuel 600 liters for each section of the locomotive is capable of providing continuous operation at full capacity offline for up to 5-6 hours.

The locomotive consists of two sections. However, the design of the locomotive provides the possibility of its use in multiple units in different variants, e.g. consisting of three or four sections. In part two-section electric locomotives and also when working in multiple units 3 and 4 sections, each section in the regular mode is a completely Autonomous locomotive.
Freight locomotive series 2ЭВ120 has a modular design. The electronic control system of an electric locomotive has 100% redundancy and is built on the principle of distributed embed the required modules.
Electric 2ЭВ120 has an intelligent automatic system for dynamic control of traction engines , “ECO”, which allows you to more efficiently consume energy depending on weight of the composition, profile of the path and speed of movement. Thereby reducing costs of electricity in the conduct of the empty or “underutilized” compositions.
The intelligent diagnostics system of the locomotive allows you to identify up to 940 species of failures.
Increase the speed of the locomotive in 2018 of up to 140 km/h opens up the possibility for expedited freight transport on the territory of Russia and CIS countries.
The locomotive has a lower impact on the path – 30% below the standard indicators and has a high coupling properties (coefficient of friction is 0.33 in the calculation mode).
