Scientists have proposed biological method of purification of water reservoirs from contamination with radionuclides, including the most dangerous strontium-90 and cesium-137. This method is the use of a plant called water hyacinth (eyhorniya excellent), which is like a sponge absorbs all organic and mineral substances, including heavy metals and radionuclides (including strontium-90 and cesium-137). This method of biological purification of sewage and other waters is universal – it successfully showed up on the pig farm, and a mining and processing plant, and water utilities.

Studies have shown that it (water hyacinth) absorb huge amounts of heavy metals and radionuclides: strontium and caesium – to 4.6-4.8 grams per kilogram of dry weight of plants.

 


Purification technology:

Technology of water cleaning from radionuclides is simple. In summer, the water hyacinth are planted in contaminated body of water. When the water hyacinth grows, it needs to collect. “Harvest” dried and after drying to send to the furnace where tons of dry plants will be no more than 20 pounds of radioactive ash which is not difficult to bury.
