Cryogenic cutting – cutting materials wherein the cutting tool is used supersonic (up to 3 Mach numbers) the stream of liquid nitrogenhaving a temperature of from -150 to -179 °C, emitted from a special nozzle at high pressure (400 to 4000 kg/cm2).
The mechanism of cryogenic cutting is based on the fact that the jet of liquid nitrogen penetrates into the smallest cracks, there rapidly expands, transforming into a gaseous state at 700 times, thereby increasing the kinetic energy, and breaks off material from the inside.
Cryogenic cutting allows you to cut vertolety and durable materials not available to other types of cutting. The cutting efficiency of the materials depends on the pressure (400 to 4000 kg/cm2), temperature (from 150°to -179 °C) and nozzle distance to the surface.
At low pressure jet of liquid nitrogen only cleans hard-to-remove coatings (paints, corrosion, rust, etc.) with the surface of the material. Therefore, the equipment the cryogenic cutting machine can be used not only for cutting but also for cleaning hard-to-remove coatings from the surfaces of materials, including fragile items. Moreover, with this equipment it is possible to carry out the demetallization products. For example, it is possible to clear the steel from the protective zinc layer without damaging the base metal. In the future it is also expected to replace the sandblast cleaning of metal surfaces at cryogenic as a more environmentally friendly and safe for personnel.
