Description:

Alkylation is widely used in fuel, chemical and petrochemical industries. The process of alkylation are leading chemical processing of oil raw materials, including petroleum hydrocarbon gases.

Alkylation is a process which aims to obtain high-octane components of automobile gasoline from unsaturated hydrocarbon gases. At the core of the process is the reaction of a compound alkene and alkanes with obtaining alkanes with number of carbon atoms equal to the sum of atoms of carbon in the source alkane and alkene. Because the highest octane have molecules of alkanes with ISO-structure, the molecules of the feedstock should also have ISO-structure.

The result of alkylation is to obtain the alkylate, a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons (mainly isooctane and trimethylpentane) with a boiling point of 40-180 OS fluid with a density 0,698-0,715 g/cm3 and an octane rating of at least 90.

Alkylate has a high octane number and is used as a component of modern commercial gasoline. Compounding (mixing) of modern commercial gasoline with alkylate is made with the purpose of increasing the octane number of commercial gasoline and compliance with environmental rules and regulations.

The process of alkylation can occur in the presence of catalysts at low temperature and at high temperature. Accordingly, various techniques are used for the alkylation.

Traditionally used two techniques of alkylation and obtaining alkylates: sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric alkylation. In the process these technologies are used as catalysts, respectively sulfuric acid and hydrogen fluoride.
