Alexandrite laser:

The alexandrite laser is a solid – state laserin which the active medium for obtaining coherent electromagnetic waves of the infrared range is used artificially grown alexandrite.

Alexandrite is used as the active medium, is a variety of the mineral chrysoberyl BeAl2O4 with a mixture of chromium ions Cr3+. Chromium ions Cr3+ ions replace part of the aluminum Al3+ (of the order of 0.04-0.12 at. %) in the structure of the crystal lattice of chrysoberyl. For the alexandrite laser is used artificially grown alexandrite.

The wavelength of an alexandrite laser light is from 700 to 820 nm.

The alexandrite laser works mainly in pulsed mode, can also operate in continuous mode.

In alexandrite laser population inversion of excited atoms of chromium is achieved using a pulsed gas discharge lamps or laser diodes. Further, ions of chromium, moving from the excited state to the ground, give a quantum of electromagnetic radiation (photon).

The device is the alexandrite laser is generally similar to the device of the ruby laser.

The alexandrite laser is used in cosmetology, dermatology and laser of the rangefinder.
